APPRAISER: A-ha, so, you suspect that, uh, perhaps it might be from New England then?
GUEST: I would think so-- I don't think it's, you know, uh, uh, it'd be nice if it was from the Hudson Valley, 'cause that stuff is nice, too.
APPRAISER: Well, I'll tell you what, Alice, it's, uh, it is from New England, but it's probably up a little bit further than you suspect, because the aspect of this piece, with its scrolled sides and coved applied moldings in these panel doors, is very distinctive of furniture that was actually made in Canada.
GUEST: Canada?
APPRAISER: Canada.
So the dealer you bought it from, uh, did he tell you it was a very valuable piece?
GUEST: No, there was no indication of that.
Of course, you have to realize I've had the piece 40, 45 years.
APPRAISER: Right.
GUEST: And the attitude towards antiques is a lot different today than it was at that time.
APPRAISER: Well, what do you think the value of the piece is?
GUEST: Well, it'd be nice if I could get a nice new car out of it.
(both laughing) APPRAISER: Well, if it's a new car, uh, I think it's going to be a very small car.
GUEST: Small car.
APPRAISER: And I would say its value is probably in the $2,500 to $3,500 range.
GUEST: All right, I'm happy with that.
APPRAISER: Well, it's charming-- well, thank you for bringing it in.
GUEST: Yeah.
Yeah.
APPRAISER: And, uh, it's a good place to put your China and your, uh storage.
GUEST: It holds a tremendous amount.
