(applause) I was excited about coming on this show.
I went and learned some new jokes.
I'm famous for my dumb jokes, so I got some new dumb jokes to tell y'all.
(laughter) Did you hear the one about, the fella going down the road out in the countryside and his car stalled out?
Well, he gets out of the car and pulls up the hood, looking up under there to see what's wrong.
This cow comes walking down by the fence line.
Cow stops right beside him, and says, "Well, I believe the troubles in your carburetor."
Well it just shocked the poor fella to death.
And he took off running down the highway.
He saw a farmhouse and ran up there.
There's a farmer standing outside.
I have farmers involved in about all of my jokes.
Runs up to the farmer and says, "Sir...
I just saw a talking cow out there by that pasture."
He said, "Was it a big brown cow, had a little white spot over her left eye?"
The guy said, "Yeah, it sure was."
He said, "Oh, that's old Bessie.
She doesn't know anything about cars.
Don't pay any attention to her."

(applause) Bruce> Mike, tell me a little bit about Ridge Hill.
You guys have not been together that long as a band?
> No, only about eight or nine months, actually.
We got together at jam sessions, last year.
We'd seen each other off and on over the months, and... basically decided we want to, get together to see how we could do as a band, you know, tighten up everything gelled slowly.
Bruce> And so you're actually not all from the same town, Jonathan, are you?
Just different places.
Jonathon> Sort of spread out, you know.
Bruce> Well, how do y'all ever get together to practice?
> Generally we rotate between, Mike's house in Great Falls and Jon's house in Lancaster and, Joe in Fort Mill.
I live in Blythewood.
I'm the furtherest apart.
So instead of, I usually go there because you just have one person instead of three people go the furthest.
Bruce> Well Don, you play the mandolin with Ridge Hill.
And... now the way I understand it, you haven't been playing that long, right?
Don> I picked up the mandolin about three years ago and started going to jam sessions at Bill's Music Shop in Columbia.
Bruce> Yeah.
That's amazing.
Don> And, just set off to the side and got kind of hooked on it.
And, I had, six lessons from a man named Lewis Price from right here in Sumter, South Carolina.
And, he kind of clicked the light bulb on me, for me, pretty good.
He's a really good teacher.
He quit teaching, unfortunately, but, he clicked the light bulb on for me, and I ended up buying one of his mandolins.
So I have a Pricetone mandolin that he makes by hand right here in Sumter.
Bruce> So you already knew a little something about music?
Because I'll tell you.
Listening to you practice, a while ago, you're good on that mandolin.
Don> Well, I played the trumpet when I was in high school.
That's the extent of my musical background.
Bruce> Okay, so that had nothing to do with a mandolin.
(laughter) And Joe was the guitar player over here, and, that was some good picking on the guitar.
How long have you been at that, Joe?
Joe> About 25 years.
And still can't do anything with it.
Bruce> You know a few notes don't you?
(laughter) And then Jonathan is the youngest member of the band here, and... and I was kind of amazed to learn that you haven't been playing banjo that long, either.
> Nah, it's been about three and a half years.
I heard it on the radio one day, you know, and I didn't know what it was at first, you know.
I liked it and found out what it was and I got me a banjo and started learning.
Bruce> Didn't know what it was?
(laughter) Mike> Jonathan's had a lot of support from his family, too, and he's a dedicated musician.
Bruce> It sounds like it.
Mike> He spends hours.
Jonathan> I just love it, you know.
I just love, love playing.
Bruce> It some good picking.
And I know that, you guys already have a couple of CDs out.
Mike> Our first CD, we came out with is, a gospel CD, bluegrass, with a little bit of gospel about two months later.
Bruce> And the, bluegrass is really, it seems like it's kind of enjoyed a kind of a comeback with the young crowd these days.
And you're getting more and more people into bluegrass.
Have you, have y'all seen that out on the road playing, kind of renewed enthusiasm?
Mike> Yes, sure have, especially- When we go, we go to Virginia to a, Bluegrass Festival or... competition up in Galax, Virginia.
It's amazing the number of young people... rabid bluegrass fans up there.
And it's growing down here too.
Jonathan's evidence of that.
It's... a come back.
Bruce> Jonathan, are you... as kind of a youngster on the banjo, here, are you... Who are some of your influences?
I mean, are you kind of reaching back and looking at some of these old guys like Flatt and Scruggs and people like that.
Jonathan> Yeah.
You know, I learned, I learned from Earl Scruggs, you know.
I'd listen to tapes and stuff, mostly traditional stuff, you know.
And now, you know, I'm just sort of progressing a little bit, you know, just getting into other music, you know, and just listening, more newer groups, you know, more contemporary stuff.
Bruce> You must have a good ear, I'll tell you.
Jonathan> Thank you.
Bruce> It sounds great.
Y'all are playing on the road a good bit, y'all are traveling a good bit.
Is it mostly... in South Carolina here, or y'all get out of state.
Don> Joe keeps all the statistics on that.
Joe> Probably a good bit of it.
And we're reaching into North Carolina.
We just come back, a couple of weeks ago from West Virginia.
So, things are picking up.
