Bill collectors seek the shipping merchant to report his ships have been lost at sea and his fortune is gone.

Evicted, the merchant and his daughters retreat to a country cottage.

One day, a messenger arrives with news that a ship has been recovered.

Each daughter requests finery and riches from her father, except Beauty, who asks for only a white rose.

He journeys home through a terrible storm, finding refuge in a mysterious castle.

The beast roars that the merchant must pay for stealing his precious roses.

The merchant explains the rose is for his daughter.

The beast demands that the merchant bring his daughter to the castle, or else his family will perish.

The beast allows her to go, but warns that she must return in seven days or he will die of a broken heart.

On the eighth day, Beauty realizes that she has stayed too long and hurries back to the castle.

The evil spell that changed the prince into the beast and his courtiers into the whispers is broken by Beauty's true love for the beast.

He and Beauty marry and everyone lives happily ever after.
