Carolina Bays are unique features that are found in the thousands throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain, particularly in North and South Carolina. They are shallow, oval depressions that are parallel to one another in a northwest-southeast direction. They vary in size and are sometimes bounded by a sandy ridge, usually on the southeast side.
